Surface area formulas by solid

Sphere: 4πr² · Cylinder (total): 2πr(h+r) · Cone (total): πr(r+s), s=√(r²+h²) · Cube: 6s² · Torus: 4π²Rr

r = radius, h = height, s = slant height, R = major torus radius.

Example

Sphere r = 5: Total SA = 4π × 25 ≈ 314.16. Cylinder r = 3, h = 10: Total SA = 2π × 3 × 13 ≈ 245.04.

How to interpret your result

Lateral vs base area

Lateral area is the side surface, excluding top and bottom. Total area = lateral + 2 × base (for shapes with two circular ends like cylinders).

Torus

The torus (donut shape) has no faces or base; its surface area is 4π²Rr where R is the distance from the tube centre to the torus centre and r is the tube radius.

Frequently asked questions

What is lateral surface area?
The curved or side surface, excluding top and bottom bases. For a cylinder: A_lateral = 2πrh.
What is the difference between surface area and area?
Area applies to flat 2D shapes. Surface area is the total area of all faces (flat and curved) of a 3D object.
How is slant height different from height?
Height (h) is the perpendicular distance from apex to base. Slant height (s) is the distance measured along the slanting face: s = √(r² + h²).
