Enable JavaScript to use the interactive calculator. The reference content below explains the method, formula and interpretation.
How to use this calculator Select your unit system (metric or imperial). Enter height and weight. Compare BSA results across Mosteller, DuBois, and Haycock equations. Formula & method Mosteller & DuBois BSA Formulas
Mosteller BSA = √((Height(cm) × Weight(kg)) ÷ 3600)
DuBois BSA = 0.007184 × Height(cm)^0.725 × Weight(kg)^0.425.
Example Height 175 cm, Weight 70 kg → Mosteller BSA = √((175 × 70) / 3600) ≈ 1.84 m².
Key insights Average adult BSA is approximately 1.9 m² for adult men and 1.6 m² for adult women. BSA is widely used in pharmacology to index chemotherapy dosages and cardiac output (cardiac index). The Mosteller formula is the simplest and most commonly used equation in clinical practice. How to interpret your result Mosteller BSA Standard clinical BSA estimation method.
DuBois BSA Historical reference formula for metabolic indexing.
Frequently asked questions Why use BSA instead of weight for drug dosing? BSA correlates better with metabolic rate and blood volume than body weight alone.
